Sectors and Assets

Investment managers have one aim and that is to increase the value of the funds under their management. They do this in many ways but the they must do it within the profile of the fund that they are managing. The fund is usually designated by the sector and assets in which they invest.

Sectors

These are usually geographical, in that the fund will invest in Europe, UK, Asia, North America etc. Although there are some funds that invest in the technology or IT sectors.

Assets

Assets are the holdings within the fund and these are usually grouped by type eg Income, Gilts, Property etc. The Managed Funds hold a mix of asset groups

Each fund has a designated purpose and this is sometimes included in the name of the fund eg UK Income Fund

Careful selection of funds in a portfolio can use these aims to achieve your own particular objective
